CHAPTER 1: THE SURFACE BREAKS

A storm pushed through the western ridge around 4:30 AM. The sea didn't move right after. It just...
hung there. Like it was listening.
The NOAA logs said pressure dropped, but that's not what anyone remembers. They remember the
silence.
Brian Doyle posted a 43-second clip from his dashcam. You can't find it now--it was scrubbed. But
people who saw it say it looked like the ocean cracked open. Like a shell.
He captioned it: "Going live at 6pm. I've seen it. You need to see it."
He never went live.
